Earth Stations and RF Systems

One of SED's core competencies is our in-depth RF capability - a detailed understanding of RF characteristics and applications that extends from system and circuit design through assembly, testing, tuning and troubleshooting.

We are a system provider with extensive experience that includes satellite antenna systems, frequency converters, low-noise and high-power amplifiers, switchgear and waveguide as well as modulators, demodulators, formatting and combining units, format and signal conversion systems, subcarrier synthesizers, test loop translation and ranging processors, and gain control and combining units. Our experience is in C-, L-, S-, X-, Ku- and Ka-band. Applications include uplinks, communications systems and telemetry tracking and command systems.

For example, SED provided the Radio Frequency Subsystem (RFS) and the Global Resource Management (GRM) Subsystem, key components of the Radio Access Network to be provided by Thrane & Thrane to Inmarsat Ltd., a global satellite operator based in London, for its Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) satellite system. The RFS provides the transmission and reception of RF signals between the ground-based Satellite Access System and the new Inmarsat 4 satellites. Each of the RF subsystems comprises a 13m antenna, RF equipment, power calibration equipment, and a monitor and control system.

As a further example, SED is providing the Radio Frequency Terminals (RFT) for a new mobile communications network covering North America. The network is designed to deliver advanced voice and data services via seamless satellite/terrestrial hybrid architecture.   The RFTs will be deployed at four communications gateways to be located in Canada and the USA. The high availability systems will support satellite Telemetry, Tracking and Command (TT&C) as well as communications gateway requirements.
