Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS)

Wide Area Augmentation Systems - WAAS

The Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) is a safety-critical navigation aid developed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to augment the Department of Defense’ Global Positioning System (GPS).  The primary mission of WAAS is to provide a means for successful aircraft navigation that includes all phases of flight.

To support the WAAS mission, SED has designed, developed, tested and installed multiple FAA certified Radio Frequency Units (RFU) for uplink stations.

SED has RFU’s located in Paumalu HI, Santa Paula CA (2 systems), Southbury CT, South Mountain CA, and Brewster WA.  Each RFU includes a complete uplink to uplink two distinct carriers containing GPS-like integrity and correction data.  The RFU receives two RF carrier signals that are amplified and routed to the baseband equipment for demodulation and signal integrity checking.

SED also provided our proprietary Mon-A-Co™ software to monitor and control all aspects of the Radio Frequency Unit (RFU).
