SED is trusted and reliable provider of cost-efficient systems, applications, and engineering tools for satellite operators. We work closely with our customer’s operational and engineering groups providing operational systems, customized tools, and domain-knowledgeable technical support to efficiently plan, manage, and optimize their existing and evolving satellite fleets. SED has provided bespoke applications for long-term capacity planning, yield assessment and tradeoff analysis, and evaluating alternative frequency reuse schemes by simulating network services.
The SED Payload Configuration Tool (PCT) is an offline planning tool designed for use by payload engineers/satellite operators for managing the configuration of a transparent multi-beam satellite communications payload. The PCT provides a graphical user interface that models the connectivities of the payload channels and beams, including the major payload components, switch positions, gain settings, and redundancy configurations.
The PCT includes a connectivity analysis module that is used to evaluate alternative payload configurations for varying operational scenarios (i.e., payload device failure, revised frequency plans). Given a user-entered operational scenario, the analysis module ranks alternative connectivities according to a scoring function and presents the results on the PCT user interface. The scoring function can consider device failures, path loss, and user-entered ranking factors such as the number of disrupted busy paths, the number of switch position changes, and the number of switches a path crosses.
Given the payload connectivity specifications and block diagrams of a spacecraft payload, SED engineering services prepares and configures the payload models and mimic displays included in the deliverable PCT software. Optionally, the PCT software can be customized to support an interface to the Satellite Control Center Real-time System (RTS). This option provides functionality for generating RTS-compatible procedure set files for upload to the RTS, and for retrieving the current payload configuration from telemetry data queried from the RTS.
The SED Capacity Planning Tool aids in the planning of spectrum capacity. The Capacity Planning Tool allows the synthesis of individual beam loading profiles from historical record data, scaled by future growth predictions. These profiles are then processed in a simulation environment to determine a statistical estimate of the required bandwidth in a number of geographical zones.
The SED Frequency Plan Test Tool is a simulation and analysis tool to evaluate the performance of frequency plan modifications prior to implementation on the operational network. The Frequency Plan Test Tool allows recorded traffic profiles to be replayed against an operational test-bed system for the purposes of investigating operational anomalies, evaluate alternative frequency reuse scheme including coloring, clustering, and geographic zones, and creating occasional-use plans to accommodate disasters and major international incidents.
The SED Yield Planning Tool is a high-performance application that analyzes call data records to assess overall traffic demand and simulate alternative network configurations in attempt to maximize revenue. The Yield Planning Tool imports and analyzes historical SCPC call data records to calculate the carried traffic load, and to infer offered load from failed call attempts. Offered loads are then processed in a simulation environment to determine a statistical estimate of the performance of the planned spectrum.
